Advent Children...

I haven't really posted about 'Advent Children'. Sure - I mentioned that it was all other Shibuya, sold out in all stores, and a whole bunch of Cosplay peeps have wonderful new outfits - but I haven't really mentioned the film.

I've watched it about 3 times now. Once in Japan and a couple of times on the train on the way to and from work.

It's something really special.

I can't say I'm following the story blow by blow cos the Japanese DVD doesn't have English subs. There is a 'fan sub' version - but I haven't had a look at that yet.

Do you need to the subs? Not really. In fact if you read the subs you might just miss something. The movie is a feast for the eyes. Truly beautiful.

There's love in every frame. The backgrounds are exquisite. The character models are flawless. The mechanical design is stunning. The action sequences unlike anything I've seen.

The movie is about 60% action, and it's intense. The last half of the movie is pretty much one huge battle sequence - yet unlike, say, 'Bad Boys 2' it never drags, seems ludicrous, or stops to inject some worthless humor etc.

There IS humor in the movie.

The Turks are funny as hell, almost slap-stick. But the humor is pitched just right. Juxtaposed perfectly with the straight performances of the lead characters.

While watching Advent Children it's easy to forget one of the most incredible things about this movie.

This movie was CREATED BY, FUNDED BY, SCRIPTED BY, ART DESIGNED BY, PRODUCED BY, DIRECTED BY, AND DISTRIBUTED BY A VIDEOGAMES COMPANY.

Okay - Square Enix is not your average videogame company, but still - it's a glimpse of what a motivated and talented (and highly profitable) videogame company can do.

This is nothing to do with traditional film making, Hollywood politics, and compromised vision. This is the movie they wanted to make. You can tell, because simply - it's an amazing experience.

I just wish I could go see it at some high-end, digital projection equipped theater.

Oh...

...and I'm still totally in love with Tifa.

Along with Sin City, this is the film of the year.

Nic.

P.S. I think I might go see Land of the Dead today...

Why is it when I see the name Tifa, I always think of Tif files ... especially when the person is made of pixels. I'll ask my animated friends J. Peg and Gif if they have a response to this! :-)
